Demolition of a 200-year-old traditional house
I'm here to help Soushin @soushin.work in Tottori.
After removing the tiles, we use a crowbar to scrape off the cedar split timber roofing (old roofing) known as "tonton".
The structural materials in the attic have turned pitch black from years of use of "kudo"(fire cooking stove).
The other day, the founder of Soushin gave me a thought-provoking talk.
Originally, houses were made by assembling pieces, tightening them with plugs and wedges, and weaving komai.
A house built by "tying" is built on the premise that it will also be "untyed".
In other words, it is easy to work on when repairing or relocating.
When talking about the energy-saving performance of a house, the focus tends to be on secondary energy consumption, but if you consider the process of building, living and connecting, the way of living, and the materials, you may see something different.

Somakosha is based in Okayama and builds houses and restores old houses using natural materials and “soma” techniques. We propose beautifully aged architecture made from wood, earth, stone, bamboo and paper.
