杉、鉋仕上げ
杉は鉋で仕上げるのが難しいと言われている材料です。
刻んだり削ったりしてみると、冬目（冬の間に木が育って形成される層）はとても硬いのに対して夏目（夏の間に木が育って形成される層）はスポンジのように柔らかいため、その難しさに直面します。
また、刃物が切れやむのがとても早いため、再々研ぎ直す必要があります。
刃物を研ぐのが厳しい季節となってきました。
一度の研ぎでも鉋は微妙にその形を変えていきます。
鉋の形にピッタリとあつらえた鉋台はその鉋との馴染みを悪くしていきます。
刃先の押さえ溝との密着を保つため、定期的な裏出しが必要になります。
捉えるのが難しい機微を捕まえてこそきちんとした削りに繋がるようです。

Cedar is said to be a difficult material to finish with a plane.
