茅葺き屋根の葺き替え工事
数年前に茅葺の葺き替えにボランティアで参加させて頂きました
90歳に迫る茅葺職人さんの指導の元、数十人で構成されたボランティアで葺き替え作業をおこないました
屋根材となる茅の束はおおよそ一抱えの大きさの物を藁縄で簡単に結えた物です
長さや先細りの具合、密度がまちまちであるため、あらかじめ3-4種類に分けておきました
軒先に適した物、隅に適した物、平葺きに適した物
指示を受けながら皆で、少しづつ茅束を屋根に乗せては下地に結えていきます
教えの中で印象的だったのが水道（みずみち）への配慮です
瓦屋根のような硬い水を弾く材料と違って、茅葺は急勾配に設定し、重量による水切れを良くして極力素早く水下へ処理するべきです
度重なる雨の流れが少しづつ特定の場所にのみ「みずみち」を形成していきます
上手な屋根の葺き方は極力その特定の「みずみち」を形成させることのないよう、茅束の密度や重なり、脚の長さや締め具合を感覚で測りながら進めていくのだそうです
不均一な物を組み合わせて長い間機能する物を施工する
とても示唆深い考え方です
集落で手に入りやすい素材を材料とする事
集落総出で作業にあたる「結」の考え方
何世代にもわたる実践物理学である「観察」を通じて知識を知恵として技に織り込む工夫
機能美を目指した物が純粋な美しきものとして人の目に映る不思議
屋根として役目を終えた茅材は炊き付け、畑の肥料、土壁の材料と形を変え使用し尽くされ土に還っていきます
The most impressive thing about the teachings was the consideration of water channels.
Unlike hard materials that repel water, such as tile roofs, thatch should be set at a steep slope to allow water to drain easily due to its weight and to be disposed of as quickly as possible. It is an ingenious way to weave knowledge into skills as wisdom through "observation," which is practical physics that has been passed down for generations. It is a wonder that something that aims for functional beauty appears to the human eye as something purely beautiful. After serving as a roof, the thatch material is transformed into firewood, fertilizer for fields, and material for earthen walls, and is used up and returned to the soil.
